Akutabe to mechanized Ose

Akutabe (芥辺, Akutabe) is one of the main characters of Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san. He is the head of the Akutabe's Detective Agency, a demon contractor, and Sakuma's employer.

He is currently the contractor of Undine

Personality[]

"Akutabe's Detective Agency Office's Head. A detective that solves cases by the use of demons. For some reason, he seems to have a soft spot for Sakuma. He won't hesitate from using the demon's abilities. Because of his overwhelming power, the demons call him "The Devil". They're all terrified of him. It's a mystery as to what his goal is." Akutabe's Official Profile.

Akutabe is extremely strict, cruel, and frightening, especially towards demons. He is short-tempered and vicious, although he maintains a calm and polite attitude towards humans. Because of his short temper, all the demons who encounter him, fear him.

Akutabe enjoys seeing the ugly side of human nature, as he usually expects the worst out of people in general.

Besides managing the demon agency, he also collects grimoires from all around the world. He will go to any corner of the Earth to get his hands on a grimoire and does not hesitate to do anything to claim it, even resorting to stealing. He claims that he does this to keep grimoires from falling into the wrong hands, but his true motives are unknown.

Akutabe will do almost anything to fulfill his client's request, often overstepping his bounds as a detective to use the abilities of his contracted demons, but has stated that he will never resort to killing.

Despite his reputation as a cruel tyrant, Akutabe has shown to have a softer side. As stated by Azazel, he seems to have a soft spot for Sakuma and treats her with some respect although his intentions towards her are ambiguous at best. At one point, Beelzebub wonders why is he so fixated on her, as Akutabe is very intent on keeping her at the agency. Additionally, Akutabe seems to be nicer to most humans: he is always polite to his clients and almost never uses violence towards normal humans. He also houses his friend's grandson, Kotaro, whom he also seems to soften towards as the series progresses, and is currently his guardian. He often has to watch out for him whenever he is in trouble, such as when a mechanized Ose went out of control, and Akutabe fought him and kept Osamu and Kotaro away from danger.

Appearance[]

Akutabe has spiky black hair and wears a black business suit with a black tie. He has sharp black eyes (dark brownish red in the anime), and no visible eyebrows except during certain scenes in early chapters. In the anime, his eyes glow red or purple when enraged. Curiously, he is the only human character that wears the same attire throughout the entire show with Azazel often confusing him with other businessmen.

Powers & Abilities[]

Contractor[]

As a contractor he is able to see, interact with, and summon all kinds of demons. Akutabe is noted to be a fearsome and powerful contractor, striking fear into all the demons he encounters.

Strength[]

Akutabe has a mysterious ability that allows him to kill and torture demons without touching them. This ability even allows him to break through different dimensions with only punches and kicks. He might also possess supernatural strength, as he was able to fight hand-to-hand with a giant, mechanized Ose.

Psychic Shield[]

Akutabe appears to be immune to demonic abilities: Gusion failed to eat his memories, Beelzebub could not influence Akutabe with his ultimate forced defecation ability, and Moloch II failed to attack him as he would any other individual. With each of these instances, Akutabe effectively nullified each demon's attack with a swat of his hand.

Solomon Ring[]

Solomon Ring is a restricting force, used to restrict a summoned demon's power. This makes the demon appear much smaller and less threatening. Akutabe is revealed to have set up this force to limit the abilities of the demons he summons at his agency.

Intelligence[]

As a detective, Akutabe has a great ability for deduction. He can apply the abilities of his contracted demons to assist him in his work and has a vast knowledge of the occult. He is an expert at spells and summoning and is sometimes seen executing spells without the use of a grimoire.

Relationships[]

Humans[]

Akutabe is polite and civil to people he interacts with, particularly his clients. He maintains a cool, calm demeanor and does not typically direct his temper towards humans.

Sakuma[]

Akutabe has been noted to have somewhat of a soft spot for Sakuma. He is notably kinder and forgiving towards her than others and treats her with patience and respect, although his reasons for doing so are unknown. Akutabe appears to consider Sakuma his mentee as well as employee, sometimes taking the time to warn her of the potential dangers of summoning and allowing her access to multiple grimoires and contracts with demons. He also seems to hold himself responsible for Sakuma's safety, sending both Beelzebub and Azazel to investigate her "odd behavior" when she joined her university's cosplay club and breaking through an interdimensional barrier to rescue her. He values her work at the agency and was willing to blackmail her in order to keep her from leaving, despite Sakuma having no intention of doing so.

Demons[]

Akutabe is notably violent, sadistic, and unforgiving towards the demons both in his employ and out. He does not tolerate disobedience nor mistakes and punishes his demons regularly with bodily harm, although he is willing to overlook their faults to keep them under contract at his agency. Akutabe is shown to value demons due to their abilities and their potential usefulness rather than their individual worth. As such, he is shown intimidating and abusing Lucifer and Salamander despite both not being under his contract. Throughout the series, Akutabe is shown to be terrifying to almost all the demons he encounters, with the mere thought of his retribution enough to send Azazel, Beelzebub, and Salamander into near hysterics.

Azazel[]

Akutabe intimidates and treats Azazel violently, often kicking, slicing, and crushing him with various objects even after transferring Azazel's contract to Sakuma. Akutabe has little tolerance for Azazel's mistakes and general personality, but finds him valuable enough to employ in his agency.

Beelzebub[]

Akutabe typically finds Beelzebub more bearable than Azazel. He finds Beelzebub responsible enough for Akutabe to remove Solomon's Ring for Beelzebub to adopt his humanoid form and investigate Sakuma's odd behavior when she joins the cosplay club.

Undine[]

Akutabe is willing to emotionally manipulate Undine's crush on him in order to use her abilities more effectively. He tends to adopt a falsely affectionate personality before harshly switching back to his brutal and violent tendencies.

Moloch[]

Moloch I had Akutabe's respect due to his brutal efficiency as a "back up" ability of intimidation and violence, although Akutabe's reaction to Moloch I's death was ambiguous. Moloch II, on the other hand, was seemingly held at a much lower regard after his attempt to assassinate Akutabe. Akutabe attempted to kill Moloch II for accidentally discovering Akutabe's mysterious true identity and Moloch II was so shocked and terrified by his discovery that all his hair turned white.

Trivia[]

  • His first name and age are still unknown and his race is dubious, with some characters suspecting he is not human.
  • Mossan II was terrified of Akutabe's true identity, which has yet to be revealed.
  • Akutabe's voice actor, Daisuke Namikawa, also voices the narrator and sings the Mossan theme for the first episode of Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san Z.
  • Akutabe is seen reading all kinds of books, up to and including children's books.
  • During a certain time of the month, his mood nosedives and his senses heighten. The reason has yet to be revealed.
  • The shadowy figure that appears when Osamu talks about Solomon's Ring bears a striking resemblance to Akutabe.
